The expelled teenagers and children of Kosovo, with whom ”My Asylum” kept in contact with, were expelled from Denmark in the years 2006-2009 after living there for 4-8 years. The teenagers and children were in the ages of 6 to 18 years old at the time that they were expelled. They have lived in Denmark for a long time before that. The families moved to Denmark (1999 – 2002) because of the war and ethnic persecution.
From 2005/2006 FN’s Kosovo Mission, in partnership with NATO, was lucky to stabilize the situation and halt the attacks on Kosovo’s many minorities.
Many of the expelled children spent a lot of years in Denmark. Legally, they were not Danish, but the feelings and culture has nothing to do with the law. Denmark and the Danish culture became a huge part in the children’s identity.
When you arrive to Denmark at the ages of 3 to 8 years old, and then must move back to a foreign country during adolescence or later, it is very difficult to adapt to the schooling system – more difficult than for children starting pre-school, which is also a challenge. The children’s recollection of Kosovo were war and abuse. They were terrified.
